7 January 2003 A quarter of Britons are email ignorant... Despite massive technological advances in recent years, a staggering 14 million people in the UK have yet to send or receive an email, a survey released today by the Amstrad em@ilerplus reveals. The headline figure also conceals quite large regional variations in email acceptance. Whereas 8% of people in the South of England have yet to communicate via email, a huge 35% of their Northern counterparts claim to have never made this technological leap forward. The Amstrad em@ilerplus survey then asked those who had never sent an email as to the main reason why. 44% said it was because they did not have access to a computer either at work or home, 27% claimed they were scared or anxious about the technology involved in sending an email, 12% said it was down to the expense and 5% just did not want to and preferred using other means of communication. Simon Sugar, Commercial Director for the Amstrad em@ilerplus said: “It is very surprising that such a huge amount of people in this country are still yet to send or receive an email. Technology is getting easier, thanks to products like the Amstrad em@ilerplus, yet millions still haven’t made that step forward. Hopefully 2003 will be the year that changes that.” The Amstrad em@ilerplus, at £49.99, is the ultimate communication tool for the home with a pay-as-you-go email facility, internet access, sms texting as well as being a digital telephone and answerphone.
